José M Carballido

José M. Carballido holds a MSc degree in Biology from the University of Barcelona (ES) and a PhD in Immunology from the University of Zurich (CH). In 1997, following a Postdoctoral training at the DNAX Research Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology in Palo Alto (CA), José joined the Novartis Research Institute in Vienna (AT), where he remained until its closure in 2008. Since then, he has been working at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research in Basel (CH), first in the Autoimmunity, Transplantation and Inflammation Disease Area and more recently in Translational Medicine / Preclinical Safety.
José is an immunologist by training. He has contributed to drug development in allergic and autoimmune diseases and in the prevention of transplant rejection. Recently, José has been leading a variety of immune tolerance projects; targeting immune checkpoints and promoting antigen-specific regulatory T cells using bispecific antibodies and nanomedicine approaches. He is now applying his research and development insights to advise on safety aspects of Novartis compounds interfering with the immune system.
